Severstal - SKA

Severstal - SKA - 2:3

2 September 2021

In the first match of the 2021/2022 KHL regular season, SKA edged past Severstal Cherepovets on the road, earning a slender 3:2 victory.

Kirill Marchenko opened the scoring in the second minute of play following a Severstal defensive mix-up. However, the hosts quickly managed to get on level terms, as Robert Rooba beat Alexander Samonov with a low attempt on the powerplay.

Jakob Stenqvist subsequently gave Severstal the lead midway through the second stanza with a rising attempt. To their credit, the hosts were piling the pressure on SKA throughout the game, pressing our defence with intense play and testing Samonov at any given opportunity.

SKA could have equalised at the end of the second period, but Marchenko couldn't convert a penalty shot after a foul had been committed against the clean-through Anton Burdasov.

Nevertheless, SKA would come good in the subsequent third frame.

Shorthanded, Fredrik Handemark went top-shelf on Severstal goalkeeper Konstantin Shostak, before Linden Vey cleaned up the loose change on the slot with a little more than five minutes remaining.

SKA will now prepare to face Lokomotiv in Yaroslavl on Saturday. Puck-drop is scheduled for 17:00 local time.
