Tense win to start Puchkov Tournament!

27 August 2026

SKA were pushed all the way by a strong Barys Astana side, eventually edging past their Kazakh opponents by a slender score of 2:1 after a penalty shootout in the maiden game of the Nikolai Puchkov Tournament.

In a somewhat ponderous, uneventful encounter, SKA conceded late before subsequently snatching a hard-fought victory on penalties.

Matvei Korotky had initially opened the scoring in the eighth minute of the second stanza, sending his low effort between the pads.

Largely thanks to calm goalkeeping from the solid Sergei Ivanov, that goal long appeared as though it would be enough for SKA.

Nevertheless, Barys did grab their equaliser with a little over four minutes in regulation time with Vsevolod Logvin forcing the puck over the line at point-blank range.

After both teams traded big opportunities in the ensuing overtime period, the outcome was indeed decided in the shootout as Danil Aimurzin and Linus Weissbach hit the jackpot.

SKA will return to action tomorrow at the competition against Admiral Vladivostok. Puck-drop is scheduled for 19:00 local time.
