SKA - Dynamo Moscow - 3:4

12 October 2020

In a goal-filled battle, SKA fell short against HC Dynamo Moscow at the Saint Petersburg Ice Palace, conceding a narrow 3:4 defeat in the 2020/2021 KHL regular season.

It really did turn out to be a thrilling first period.

Having made a positive start to proceedings, Dynamo promptly took the lead in the fourth minute of play, as former SKA forward Dmitry Kagarlitsky lashed an instant attempt into the right corner following a poor defensive error. Nevertheless, it didn’t take long for SKA to suddenly turn the game on its head, as Vasily Tokranov tapped home from the doorstep in the seventh minute of play before Vladislav Kamenev promptly scored his maiden goal for our club as he whipped a backhanded attempt into the roof of the net when clean through.

However, Dynamo continued pressing with intensity following those two conceded goals, and Daniil Tarasov beat Mikhail Berdin from the right flank with 10 seconds remaining in the opening frame to draw the visitors level. Berdin had pulled off a couple of impressive saves in the preceding moments leading up to the goal.

The breathless action continued in the second stanza.

After missing a series of promising chances, SKA gained their second advantage of the evening with 29 minutes on the clock, as Yakov Trenin lashed an unstoppable wrister past the helpless Bocharov. Once again, our players had all of the momentum and were pressing with aggression in the Dynamo zone, but Dynamo suddenly grabbed their third marker as Vadim Shipachyov - a two-time KHL Gagarin Cup champion as a SKA forward - sent the puck under Berdin when clear of our defence. The two teams passed up good opportunities towards the conclusion of the second period as both defences struggled to deal with their task at hand.

Unfortunately, despite SKA controlling the tempo for the majority of the third period, Dynamo tallied the decisive marker of the duel with 12 minutes remaining as Artyom Volkov’s hopeful wrist shot was deflected beyond Berdin by one of our players’ sticks.

In the closing minutes, SKA were gifted two powerplays, but Dynamo held on for dear life to emerge victorious. SKA will now prepare to face Sochi on the road on Wednesday, with puck drop scheduled for 19:30 local time.
