SKA - Dynamo Moscow - 1:2 SO

12 December 2021

In a tight encounter, SKA only managed to claim the one point at the Ice Palace against Dynamo Moscow in the 2021/2022 KHL regular season, conceding a slender 1:2 defeat after a penalty shootout.

The two teams opted for a very cautious approach during the first period.

No one was willing to take any unnecessary risks. While SKA registered more shots on target (10-5) in the frame, it was Dynamo who created the best opportunities, as Stanislav Galiev was denied by the alert Lars Johansson when completely clean through and Rob Klinkhammer couldn’t hit the target from a tight angle on the left wing with our goaltender out of position.

SKA did start to create a few promising chances towards the end of the period. At the high slot, Danila Moiseev had our standout opportunity of the maiden 20 minutes, as his threatening effort was deflected up and out of play.

Our players were subsequently rewarded for a strong start to the second period with the opening goal in the 25th minute.

Emil Galimov had too much pace for his markers when pulling to the slot from the left flank, he took aim with the backhand with only Ivan Bocharov to beat, and managed to neatly lift the puck over the goalkeeper.

The Dynamo goaltender was a busy man throughout the frame. Bocharov was regularly being called into action for the away team, notably pulling off a tough save to deny Anton Burdasov 1-on-1 and making a series of solid saves during two SKA powerplays. For their part, Dynamo barely tested Johansson during the second stanza, as the Muscovites struggled with SKA’s pace and intensity across the ice.

Dynamo did make an improvement in the third period.

They did manage to tally their equaliser in the 47th minute of proceedings. Alone on the left, the in-form Dmitry Rashevsky decided to unleash a strong wrister, and his shot was simply too hot for Johansson to handle. Following their goal, Dynamo began to compete on the front foot, applying pressure on our team and creating a handful of promising chances.

Overtime was indeed required. As a consequence of committing an avoidable tripping foul after he had missed a huge chance at point-blank range, Vladislav Tsitsyura was sent to the box, a penalty which gave Dynamo a handy powerplay. To our relief, Johansson came to the rescue for SKA, stopping two strong slap shots from Vyacheslav Voynov.

But, in the penalty shootout, Oscar Lindberg and Rashevsky hit the jackpot to secure the two points for Dynamo.

SKA will return to action on December 20 against Spartak Moscow in Saint Petersburg after the international break.
