Roman Rotenberg: "We did everything possible to win this game"

28 October 2022

HC SKA head coach Roman Rotenberg:

- It was a physical, interesting match inside a packed stadium. We started well, but then the opponents improved and we had to readjust. Injuries were suffered during the game as well. We did everything possible to win this very important match. We will analyse the mistakes which we made, our next game will take place on Sunday.

- SKA dominated during the first period, but Dynamo Moscow were on top in the second and third frames. Did your players struggle physically?

- The problem was that the opponents improved following our great start. Dynamo are an organised, systematic team, and all opposing sides are playing at their best against us. We don't have any physical problems, but we have to weather the storms during games, play in the right way and avoid mistakes. Errors were committed after the first period. Opponents are always waiting for our mistakes, and today they were committed. We will improve our discipline and stop losing the puck so often. Even when you're tired, you have to continue making the right decisions and playing in the correct manner across the full 60 minutes. We will now focus on Sunday.

- How does Alexander Volkov feel after the injury which he received during the second stanza?

- We're hoping for the best, our doctors are working all of the time. We hope that he will be able to play in our next game.

- Dmitrij Jaskin is one of the KHL's best players, but he is regularly taking penalties. His penalty in the third period prevented SKA from winning in regulation time. Is there a problem here?

- Every single one of our players must compete with discipline. As our captain, Jaskin doesn't hold the right to take penalties, and this is something which applies to everyone in our team. We must work better with our legs and stop taking penalties.

- When on the powerplay in overtime, did you think about pulling the goalkeeper to play 5-on-3?

- In my opinion, it's more effective to play 4-on-3. We always act in accordance with the situation on the ice. We asked our guys to shoot in the right places; we know that Dynamo goalkeeper Konstantin Volkov is great at saving high shots. A fifth player on the ice wouldn't have helped there. Why take a risk if the situation is already in our hands? Today was our 1000th KHL match, maybe our players were a bit nervous because of this. Overall, I think that everyone enjoyed this game, we all witnessed great ice hockey. I would like to thank the fans, especially those who travelled to Moscow to support us.
