Barys - SKA - 1:4

25 September 2017

SKA made the trip to Kazakhstan for a KHL match against HC Barys in Astana. Head coach Oleg Znarok brought Jarno Koskiranta back into the roster, putting him into the second line in place of Mikhail Maltsev. Igor Shestyorkin and Henrik Karlsson were the starting goaltenders.

Aiming for a 15th consecutive victory, our players made a fast start in Astana. Sergei Kalinin opened the scoring within the first minute, catching Henrik Karlsson cold with a weak wrist shot into the right corner. Sergei wasn't finished their either, as moments later he scored from an incredibly tight angle to make it 2:0. Shocked by those two quick goals, Barys failed to trouble Igor Shestyorkin in the first period.

Patrik Hersley increased SKA's lead early in the second stanza, lashing home a one timer on the powerplay. Nevertheless, despite being down by three goals, Barys did eventually put some pressure on. Igor Shestyorkin made some excellent stops, notably shutting the door on a clean through Anton Sagadeev. Predticably, Barys were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal. Ilya Kovalchuk burst away on a counterattack, found the open Alexander Barabanov on the crease, and the latter expertly slid his shot under the netminder's pads. 4:0 after two periods.

Barys swapped the beleaguered Henrik Karlsson for Sergei Kudryavtsev at the start of the third period. Unfortunately, Kirill Polokhov then got Barys on the board with a firm effort from distance. Buoyed by that goal, the Kazakh hosts laid siege to SKA's net. Barys registered 15 shots on target in the stanza, but largely thanks to some fantastic Igor Shestyorkin saves, our team managed to hold on to the advantage. 4:1, SKA defeat Barys and keep the winning streak going!
