Spirited comeback earns valuable Moscow point

Despite eventually losing out 3:4 in overtime, SKA earned an important point on the road against Dynamo thanks to a determined two-goal comeback in the third period.
The game looked to be done and dusted as a contest after Dynamo had made it two in their favour again in the 48th minute. SKA had other ideas, though, forcing OT before settling for just the one point.
SKA got off to the worst possible start, conceding within the opening 120 seconds as Artyom Shvets-Rogovoi deflected in on the powerplay after Vladislav Romanov had committed hooking.
Matters soon became even more challenging.
With Sergei Sapego cheaply giving up possession inside his own zone, Nick Merkley pounced with a strong wrister from the right circle.
Causing our somewhat shaky defence all sorts of problems, Dynamo certainly had enough opportunities to extend their lead further during the remainder of the first period, forcing Sergei Ivanov – who made 19 saves in the maiden stanza alone - into several top stops at close range.
The lively Igor Larionov wasted SKA’s best chance, thumping over the crossbar with Vladislav Podyapolsky out of position.
The second period wasn’t such a chaotic affair.
And, to our relief, SKA got on the board midway through the stanza.
Moments after Ivanov had kept SKA in the game with a superb stop against the clean-through Jordan Weal, defenseman Vladislav Syomin sent a searing wrister through traffic and over Podyapolsky’s glove.
To their credit, Dynamo admittedly responded well to our marker.
Ivanov was certainly the busier goalkeeper throughout the remainder of the period, notably pulling off one wonderful save when brilliantly darting across to his right post to deny Mikhail Melikov.
Requiring goals, our players immediately regained the initiative in the third period.
Merkley initially provided us with a fresh setback when bundling in on another powerplay, but SKA made sure to make their pressure pay.
We didn’t have to wait long for our two goals, either, with Matvei Korotky beating Podyapolsky with a scintillating individual effort before Vasily Atanasov cleaned up the loose change.
Our team were certainly in the ascendency for the remaining 10 minutes too. However, after failing to make their pressing count, SKA then conceded a mere 33 seconds into the extra frame with Pavel Shen shooting under the pads after a controversial faceoff win.
SKA will now prepare to face Severstal in Cherepovets on Tuesday. Puck-drop is scheduled for 19:00 local time.
