Shootout setback as SKA tally CSKA point

SKA came close to snapping their six-game losing streak this Sunday evening, but wasted opportunities in overtime came back to haunt them as CSKA earned a 3:2 home shootout win.
Unfortunately, despite Denis Zernov committing goaltender interference against Artemiy Pleshkov in the extra frame, SKA failed to capitalise on the man advantage and were found wanting in the ensuing shootout.
Andrei Pedan had initially drawn first blood in the eighth minute with a hammer slap shot, before Denis Guryanov’s hopeful attempt from distance drew CSKA level.
The hosts then opened up their maiden lead of the evening late in the second stanza as Nikita Nesterov scored in similar fashion to Guryanov.
Nevertheless, Rocco Grimaldi conjured up a quick response for SKA in the early stages of the third period, whipped a firm wrister beyond Dmitry Gamzin on the counter-attack.
SKA could – and really should – have struck the killer blow in overtime. However, after Marat Khairullin had struck the pipe and Sergei Plotnikov could only stab the puck against Gamzin from point-blank range, CSKA edged it on penalties with Guryanov scoring the only goal.
Our players will now prepare to face Dinamo in Minsk on Tuesday. Puck-drop is scheduled for 19:10 local time.
