SKA fall just short in Cherepovets

5 October 2024

A late charge couldn't save SKA from a disappointing defeat in Cherepovets, suffering a slender 3:4 setback to Severstal away in the 2024/2025 KHL regular season.

With a mere matter of seconds remaining, Sergei Plotnikov almost made himself a hero for SKA after initially cutting the deficit to one, but he somehow hit the right post instead of the net with the goal completely at his mercy.

SKA quickly made life difficult for themselves in the first period. Tony DeAngelo initially put our team one to the good within the opening minute, but Severstal responded with quickfire markers from Alexander Skorenov and Alexei Kruchinin within 16 seconds of each other.

Artemiy Pleshkov was pulled in favour of Nikita Serebryakov immediately after the second conceded marker.

He was soon picking the puck out of his net too, though, as Skorenov tallied his second of the afternoon in the 17th minute.

Our team clawed one back on the counter-attack through Vasily Glotov midway through the second stanza. However, Severstal were continuing to manage the flow of the game effectively, forcing Serebryakov into a large number of challenging saves.

Kruchinin eventually grabbed the game-winner for Severstal on the counter in the 58th minute. Plotnikov neatly got the better of Konstantin Shostak with a neat finish after Serebryakov had been swapped for the extra skater, but Severstal held on for dear life.

SKA will now prepare to face Lokomotiv away in Yaroslavl on Monday. Puck-drop is scheduled for 19:30 local time.
