Press conference after the second home match against Nizhny Novgorod

2 October 2025

HC SKA head coach Igor Larionov:

"You never feel good after giving away a game which you had had under control. Yes, we got a point, but this isn't what we're talking about. This game has left us with a bitter taste in our mouth.

"We should have capitalised on our chances to end the game as a contest before the opponents scored. Unfortunately, we're continuing to shoot ourselves in the foot with our mistakes. When you don't score, the opponents will. This is how it works in sport. We must begin seeing games out with confidence."

Why SKA are struggling in third periods...

"I would tell you why if I knew! Before the third frame began today, I told the players to compete in the correct manner and using short shifts. The problem was that we committed mistakes which were punished. All of us need to take a hard long look at ourselves. We made changes to our line formations, and we began scoring goals. Do you remember the chance which Matvei Polyakov had? These are the opportunities which we must begin capitalising on. It's important that there are no easy games in this league."

Three defeats in four...

"We really miss Andrei Pedan and Nikita Zaitsev, defensemen with plenty of experience. Our young guys Nikita Smirnov and Ivan Vydrenkov are playing well, but they have a lot of responsibility on their shoulders. We need more experience in defence, because we want to be more solid. It will be great when Pedan and Zaitsev return."

Goalkeeping situation...

"We started the campaign with Artemiy Pleshkov, but then he got injured. He said that he was ready to return, however he then felt some discomfort in his lower body during training. Yegor Zavragin has been excellent for us. Sergei Ivanov started the season well, but then he became ill and got back up to speed in the VHL.

"As a consequence of playing in five consecutive matches, our goalkeeping coach decided to give Zavragin a rest today. Of course, we want to have a clear number one goalkeeper, and I think that we will make this decision in our upcoming games. Tomorrow morning, we will decide who will start against Spartak in Moscow."

Sergei Plotnikov's foul which resulted in Torpedo's penalty shot...

"He tried to save the situation. Before his foul, a series of mistakes had been committed during that particular play. Instead of conceding that goal, we should have scored to make it 3:1 and end the game as a contest. We have lots to consider."

Igor Larionov Junior's first SKA goal...

"Any goal or assist takes the weight off of your shoulders. Hopefully, this goal will help him moving forward. Igor, just like everyone else in our team, needs confidence. The priority is the team result, not individual achievements. This has always been the case both for me and Igor."

Why Ignat Lutfullin isn't receiving a chance...

"Ignat is a player who competes in an extraordinary manner. I have told him that he will play. Individually Ignat is a very talented player, he plays in a unique way and isn't afraid to make mistakes. He can make great passes and beat his opponents for skill. Ignat will travel with us to our upcoming away games. He will have his opportunity."

HC Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod head coach Alexei Isakov:

"A lot didn't go well in the opening two stanzas. We made the required changes in the second break, and we managed to score our goals and cope with SKA's pressure in overtime."

Problems in the maiden two periods...

"We allowed SKA to spend time inside our zone as a consequence of losing the puck. In the second break, we told our guys to correct this problem, wait for their chance and score the goal which might turn the game on its head. That's exactly what happened."

Issue of two consecutive away games in Saint Petersburg...

"We'll now have a short break before four home matches in a row. It's always really difficult playing two games in quick succession against one single opponent, especially when you won the first match. Nonetheless, we're happy that we found a way to turn the game around."
