Liga Stavok Sochi Hockey Open. SKA - Avangard - 1:5

In the second match of the 2023 Liga Stavok Sochi Hockey Open, SKA struggled against Avangard Omsk, suffering a heavy 1:5 defeat.
The opponents quickly opened up a two-goal lead. Nevertheless, the in-form Matvei Michkov soon halved the deficit for SKA, as the gifted 18-year-old neatly backhanded in from point-blank range after having pounced on a big rebound.
Unfortunately for us, that was as good as it got.
Unlike SKA, Avangard were ruthless when presented with opportunities in front of goal, striking twice in the second stanza. Their fourth goal did indeed result in SKA goaltender Vladislav Podyapolsky being replaced by the young Sergei Ivanov.
Nonetheless, even that change didn't have an effect on the outcome, with Avangard grabbing a fifth in the third period. Interestingly, SKA managed to outshoot their opponents 18-5 in the third frame and 47-29 in the game overall, but Avangard goalkeeper Vasily Demchenko was on top form.
In accordance with the tournament regulations, an overtime period and a penalty shootout were subsequently staged regardless. SKA won both, with Sergei Tolchinsky netting in the extra stanza and Brendan Leipsic and Arseniy Gritsyuk stealing the shootout 2:0.
