The KHL All-Star Weekend in Sochi

25 January 2015

The seventh KHL All-Star Weekend took place in Sochi, Russia. SKA were represented by captain Ilya Kovalchuk and Vadim Shipachyov, who had recently replaced Artemiy Panarin in the Western line-up.

The hockey extravaganza began on Saturday, with an ice hockey sledge match being held in the Shaiba Arena. Zvezda took on Udmurtiya, with the former coming out on top 4:3. You can take a look at the best photos from the rather unique match right here: http://ska.ru/en/media/album/view/186.

On Sunday the biggest events took place, with the masterclass of skills, Legends Match and the All-Star Game all happening. First up was indeed the masterclass, and the West came out on top overall. Sibir's Patrik Hersley was proved to have the strongest shot, before then Matt Gilroy and Ilya Kovalchuk gave the West the lead with excellent accuracy when aiming at specific targets. The Western win was then sealed in the traditional shootout, as Andrey Mironov's creative attempt while on a shopping trolley was gifted first place.

Next up was the Legends Match, as Andrey Kovalenko scored the winning goal after 34 minutes.

Last, but certainly not least, was the All-Star Game, the match that everyone packed inside the Bolshoi Ice Dome had been waiting for. It was an action packed affair, with goals galore flying in all over the place. The East eventually came out on top, as six Sergey Mozyakin goals propelled them to a 18:16 triumph. SKA's Ilya Kovalchuk still netted four for the West though, with fellow teammate Vadim Shipachyov joining in with two points (1+1).
