SKA players at the 2020 World Junior Championship

6 January 2020

We look at how SKA Saint Petersburg players competed at the 2020 IIHF World Championship, as Russia claimed a silver medal.

Yaroslav Askarov

Goalkeeper: 5 appearances, 2 victories, 87.65%

Initially, Yaroslav was the starting goalkeeper for Russia at the competition, but he was benched during the defeat to the Czech Republic. Nevertheless, he returned as a substitute in the match against the USA, subsequently starting against Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. The 17-year-old is eligible for future World Junior Championships.

Danila Galenyuk

Defenseman: 7 appearances, 0 points

In his line, Danila mainly stayed in defence, rarely joining the attack. In the KHL, he is the most well-disciplined SKA player, and he proved this by only receiving the one penalty over the course of the entire tournament in the Czech Republic.

Vasily Podkolzin

Forward: 7 appearances, 5 (1+4) points

In the maiden game against the Czechs, Vasily scored his only goal of the competition, hitting the target in the first period. The SKA forward then dished out two assists in both the victories against Germany and Sweden.

Ivan Morozov

Forward: 7 appearances, 3 (2+1) points

Ivan was the Russian hero in the semi-final. All of a sudden, he burst into life at the tournament, grabbing two goals including the overtime winnner to defeat Sweden and qualify for the showpiece final. One of the most memorable moments of the entire competition.

Kirill Marchenko

Forward: 7 appearances, 6 (2+4) points

Kirill was a big reason why Russia qualified for the knockout stage. In the vital group match against Germany, he produced a stunning performance for the Russians, scoring twice and dishing out three assists to fire the team to an impressive victory.
