Leonids Tambijevs was born on 26 September 1970 in Riga, Latvia. As a player he spent two seasons with SKA, notably making 23 appearances for our senior team in the 1990/1991 campaign and picking up 13 (7+6) points. He then tallied 16 (7+9) points across 25 matches in the subsequent season, but SKA suffered relegation and the forward promptly returned to the Latvian capital.

He eventually ended his professional career in 2008. On the international scene with the Latvian national team, Leonids registered 73 (35+38) points from 99 games and participated at 11 World Championships and two Olympic tournaments.

Leonids immediately began coaching after his playing days were over, starting out with the HC Riga system. He went on to coach in the MHL, VHL, KHL and the Kazakh Championship. Furthermore, he was the head coach of the U18 and U20 Latvian national teams at the 2012 World U18 Championship and 2013 World Junior Championship, and was also a member of the coaching staff of the senior Kazakh national side at the 2025 World Championship.

At senior club level, Leonids has worked as the head coach of Dinamo Saint Petersburg, Saryarka Karaganda, Metallurg Novokuznetsk and Admiral Vladivostok. He won the VHL with Dinamo and Saryarka, while also steering Admiral to the quarter-finals of the 2022/2023 Gagarin Cup playoffs.
